Use:
Used as an acid-base indicator stimulant laxative for the treatment of constipation
Introduction:
phenolphthalein is a weak organic acid, white or yellow tiny crystals at room temperature, odorless, tasteless, insoluble in water and soluble in alcohol (ethanol), ether.
Dissolved in alcohol solution to make acid-base indicator, colorless in acidic solution, red in alkali or alkali metal carbonate solution, but if in concentrated alkali solution, it will produce colorless three metal salts, the red color fades.
In view of this characteristic, it is often used as an indicator of acid-base titration in the laboratory.
The pH value of the color change range is 8.2~10.0, and the color change from colorless to red.
When the phenolphthalein reagent is dropped into water or a neutral, acidic aqueous solution, a white turbid substance will appear, which is due to the fact that alcohol is easily soluble in water, so that phenolphthalein which is hardly soluble in water in the reagent is precipitated.

Names and Identifiers

Phenolphthalein, a compound with the CAS number 77-09-8,

With a molecular formula of C20H14O4 and a molar mass of 318.32

Chemical Properties

It is a stable, colorless to faintly yellow crystalline powder that is soluble in ethanol and alkali solutions,

slightly soluble in ether, and insoluble in water.

it has a density of 1.27 g/cm³ at 32 °C, a melting point of 261-263 °C,

and a boiling point of approximately 417.49 °C.

Production Usage

In laboratories, phenolphthalein is a widely used acid-base indicator, changing color from colorless to red over a pH range of 8.2 to 10.0.

Beyond the lab, it's employed in industrial and agricultural production for pH control and titration analysis.

In the pharmaceutical industry, it's used as a laxative due to its ability to stimulate intestinal peristalsis.

However, it can occasionally cause allergic reactions like dermatitis.

Phenolphthalein also plays a crucial role in organic synthesis, particularly in creating high-performance polymers used in electronics, aerospace, and military applications.

Its properties make it suitable for synthesizing phthalazinone polyaryl ether ketone polymers, known for their excellent heat and chemical resistance.

Additionally, it serves as a non-aqueous titration indicator and a reagent in chromatographic analysis.

Safety

Despite its many uses, caution is advised due to its irritant nature and potential toxicity. Phenolphthalein must be handled with care, especially in pharmaceutical applications.
